Vegas Extravaganza? 6 shows, landmarks & more in 6.5 days?

    Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

We’re still playing catch-up on getting description/gallery pages up for many of our existing pins since the launch of the new site, and we’re only a few weeks removed from adding the state of New Jersey (Ocean Grove Beach), many landmarks & a see-thru bathroom  in New York City, and the aptly named Mid- Ohio Sports Car Course to the map, but that’s no cause to stop adding new pins.

We’ve finally decided that its time we added the great city of Las Vegas to the map!bigmystere

First of all we love Cirque du Soleil, having seen LaNouba in Downtown Disney Florida and also a few touring shows, and we know the great selection of shows in Vegas that are always raved about. Then you add in all the popular magicians, singers and other performers, lights, fountains, restaurants and countless things to see and Vegas seems overwhelming.

cirque-du-soleil-in-las-vegas-So we always told ourselves, that if/when we did Vegas, we had to do it right, none of this quick in/out weekend type thing, Vegas is huge, and we’d be doing ourselves and this site a disservice to only have a “quickie” with Vegas.

But a bigger trip also means more expense and time off from work needed, but “2 nights get the 3rd night free” deals at the hotels on the strip come to the rescue, and its all the motivation we need.

    So whats the masterplan?

penn-teller2Among all the other things we’re mainly going to target the trip around 5 Cirque du Soleil shows (O, Ka, Zumanity, Mystere & LOVE), Magicians (at least Penn & Teller), Blue Man Group, Numerous Landmarks (all the Vegas staples and then also the Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam which are nearby) & of course everything else Vegas has to offer… in 6.5 days.

Are we crazy? Maybe, but if you’ve seen this site you know this is the kind of thing we’re all about. Obviously we won’t be able to fit every single little thing Vegas has to offer in, but we should be able to get a very good amount of it and in the process add maybe upwards of 10-15 pins to the site, not to mention adding the great states of Nevada and Arizona.

The inevitable problem of course is money, because Vegas isn’t cheap at the list pricing. Doing the Cirque du Soleil shows alone could run us quite the bill, so if any of you Vegas/Cirque experts out there know of any cool deals or anything that can help, please feel free to comment here, we’d greatly appreciate it. Currently “Club Cirque”  has a great anniversary deal, but it runs out before our trip, so hopefully something else will come around as we near our trip.

signMore importantly if you know of things we “absolutely must see” when we’re in town, let us know that too, we surely don’t want to miss anything when we’re in town. For now, we’re going to just do more research and get more excited, you know…as well as continuing to get more of our retroactive pins uploaded and live to the new site.

A Famous Warehouse, a Harbor & Fun With Technology

    Thursday, September 17th, 2009

It’s been a while, but sooner than later we’re about to have a whole slew of new pins and pages full of all kinds of pictures. The majority of this of course is coming from past trips and the aforementioned New Jersey trip as we continue to get this new site up to date with the map itself, so look for the Skydome, CN Tower, Ford Museum, Jersey Shore, Times Square as well as many, many other locations.Plus it looks like we’ll be heading back to RFK stadium for the final World Cup Qualifying game for Team U.S.A. as we hopefully clinch our spot to go to South Africa next year!

In addition to that, you can also look forward to a new page for Camden Yards, home of the Baltimore Orioles.

Yes, I’d been there before and its been on the map for almost 3 years now, but Kelly hadn’t been; and I didn’t really get too much time to tour around the park on my first go-around. Then we found out the Orioles give you free admission to a game on the month of your birthday! On top of that, the day we chose was $1 hot dog & drink day; which by concession standards is amazing as we could essentially get to see a Major League game and eat ballpark food for a short $15-20!

So we headed to Baltimore for the day, got in early, but not early enough for a bite to eat; so we headed to the Inner Harbor which is just a short few blocks from the baseball stadium where I fought valiantly in a battle  with… my camera phone… as it continuously kept misaligning my attempts at a panoramic shot of the harbor.

For those not familiar, I have an LG Dare which has a feature on it to let you take 3 pictures in sucession and merge them to one panoramic shot. These shots are sometimes what I try to use for headers on our pin pages, as they are sometimes better than cropping images to fit a short horizontal size (such as the Ferarri shot at the Reston Towne Center).0418091510

That said… this “feature” may work more often than not; but it only works when you treat the technique as if it were an artform… and when some luck is involved…

First there’s problem A) Moving parts. You know, like boats speeding around in a harbor for example… they don’t seem to care if I ask them to stay in place as I take multiple shots of them for a minute.

Or people walking around the harbor or around (insert landmark here). So you need to develop the art of judging a moving person or object’s timing to make sure it will only appear once, and fully, in one of the 3 shots.

Then there is problem B) Me… and my apparent inability to stand perfectly still.

Doing this style of panoramic should be a simple concept: Stand in one spot take the 3 pictures to match up.  Generally I’m pretty good with this easy 5 step process of snap, turn, snap, turn, snap; but via some freak change in gravity or an inner ear problem with balance, angles change… needless to say; this will not be the headline picture for our Camden Yards page:
